Sexual assault and harassment of humanitarian aid workers, either by external actors and/or from within their own and partner organisations, is increasingly recognised as a significant risk to the life and well-being of aid workers around the world. This is especially the case for those working in remote environments or places with safety and security issues where the context itself may prevent adequate reporting and responding.
Why?
Responding to sexual assault and harassment can be difficult under any circumstances and within the humanitarian aid context, it may be even more challenging. Therefore organisations need to reflect and to prepare their response to sexual assault and harassment, from a medical perceptive as well as from a psychological, security and legal perspective.
How?
InterHealth offers 1-day course which aims to help your organisation respond appropriately in the event of sexual assault or harassment. You will be provided with the opportunity to reflect on your current organisational policies and practices. We will be focusing on the needs of the individual and how you can best support them in the aftermath of an incident. We will cover how to use the InterHealth Personal Assault Kit which contains medication and equipment to help prevent infections and pregnancy and will give you give guidance on how and when to access advice from clinicians.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Define sexual assault, abuse and harassment;
- Understand the complexity of the context of sexual assault;
- Describe the medical issues around sexual assault;
- Effectively use the InterHealth sexual assault kit and advice booklet;
- Think through the potential safety/security and legal implications of an assault within the context in which your teams operate;
- Recognize the range of psychological responses to a sexual assault and appropriately manage shock after an incident;
- Think creatively about cross-cultural implications when responding to sexual assault;
- Prepare a contingency plan in your response to sexual assault and harassment.
