Starting date: 23 Feb 2017
Ending date: 23 Feb 2017
Sexual Assault and harassment is increasingly recognised as a risk to men and women working internationally within the sector.
This course aims to help your organisation respond appropriately in the event of sexual assaults. You will be provided with the opportunity to reflect on your current organisational policies and practice, from a medical and psychological perspective.
We will be focusing on the needs of the individual in the first seven days after an assault and how you can respond effectively.
Sexual Assault Booklet & Medical Kit
We are pleased to present our new booklet for field workers and line managers, providing clear guidance on how to support and respond to the immediate needs of a colleague who has been sexually assaulted.
Sexual Assault Kits are also available through our online shop and can be purchased after a travel health consultation with one of our nurses.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the problem of sexual assault for those working internationally.
- Apply learning in their own context from the experience of colleagues in supporting survivors of sexual assault in the field.
- Identify common dilemmas faced by HR and security managers.
- Describe the medical issues around sexual assault immediately after the incident and how this impacts advance planning for HR and security policies
- Recognize the range of psychological responses to a sexual assault and appropriately manage shock after an incident, drawing on each other’s experiences of supporting someone through this initial phase.
- Effectively use the InterHealth sexual assault kit and advice booklet to support your staff.
- Identify some of the medium- and long-term medical issues for the survivor and the kinds of supports these require.
- Think creatively about cross-cultural implications when responding to sexual assault.
- Compare and contrast common experiences, feelings and defences after an assault and consider how to use this awareness to aid recovery.
- Link the psychological advice given to the individual with broader recommendations to the organisation.
This day will include presentations but also several elements where participants will be asked to participate in group learning from their experience (if any) of supporting survivors of assault. Participants with lots of experience as well as none are welcome - our aim is to all come away striving to support survivors better.
Please note: If you are affected in any way by the disturbing nature of the content of this seminar we strongly advise you talk it over with someone you trust.
