When a crisis happen in the field such as a death, serious illness, injury, abduction or mugging, it does not only affect the staff involved. The impact is felt by colleagues, friends, connected communities, and the biggest impact is on family members.
In the event of a crisis, families often depends on the organization for updates and guidance on the way forward. This communication is essential for their wellbeing as well as for the wellbeing of the affected staff member. However communicating with families in times of crisis can be extremely challenging. Moreover the existence of (social) media has had significant impact on communication in crisis. It is for instance likely that information regarding a crisis filters to the public domain long before the organization initiates contact with the impacted family. Furthermore, information disseminated on social media is often inaccurate and this generates anxiety and distress for colleagues and families.
The family Liaison in Crisis (FLIC) training will enhance your organization’s preparedness in responding to families during crisis. It will help you to understand the principles of family liaison that are pertinent to develop effective, safe and professional relationships with families. The course will equip you with skills and knowledge on the best way to support a family and also to think through self-care strategies to ensure that your resilience and wellbeing does not suffer in the process of responding to a crisis.
